New York was first explored by Henry Hudson in 1609, leading to Dutch settlement and the founding of New Amsterdam in 1624. The English seized control in 1664 and renamed it New York, which went on to become the 11th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1788.

Fort Ticonderoga, built by the French in the 1750s, was captured from the British in 1775 by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold, and the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France dedicated in 1886, has welcomed millions to New York Harbor as a symbol of freedom ever since.
New York has also given the nation a president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, born in Hyde Park in 1882, and a national pastime, with Cooperstown recognized as the birthplace of baseball and home to its Hall of Fame. [Read more in the included brochure]
