This ornament borrows its name from one of the most famous images of the Revolution: "The Spirit of '76," painted by Archibald Willard around 1875 for the nation's Centennial the following year. It shows three weary but determined figures, a fifer, a drummer, and a wounded flag bearer, marching through a battlefield. Willard modeled the central drummer on his own father, a minister, giving the painting a personal note beneath its patriotic one. The image became so iconic that its title still gets borrowed 150 years later for pieces just like this one.
