More about the park

President Theodore Roosevelt first protected the area in 1909, setting aside 615,000 acres as Mount Olympus National Monument to safeguard its herds of Roosevelt elk, already named in his honor for his conservation efforts. His cousin, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, toured the peninsula in 1937 and was struck by its ancient forests, pushing Congress to establish Olympic National Park the following year.

Roosevelt elk still roam here by the thousands, sheltered in part by the Hoh Rainforest, one of the largest temperate rainforests in the country, where moss hangs from bigleaf maples that see well over 100 inches of rain a year. The same park holds Mount Olympus, its glaciated 7,980-foot summit, and more than 70 miles of wild Pacific coastline, a combination of ecosystems rare enough that UNESCO named the park a World Heritage Site in 1981.
