What the ornament celebrates
Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872 by the United States Congress. It was signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant, becoming the first national park not just in the USA but in the world! It is a national treasure spanning 3,468 square miles of lakes, canyons, rivers, mountain ranges, geysers, and springs.
Yellowstone sits on top of a super volcano, which is the reason for its many unique geothermal features. It is also home to the largest concentration of mammals in the lower 48 states. In this ornament, you will see some of the park’s unique treasures.
Yellowstone’s famous bison herd is the oldest and most public bison herd in the United States. The grizzly bear is one of two species of bear found in the park. Today, grizzly bears can only be found in two places in the US, one being in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. In this ornament, you will also see a body of blue water, but it isn’t just any body of water. Known as the Grand Prismatic Spring, it is the largest hot spring in the US and the third largest in the world. Also, there are an abundance of beautiful waterfalls in the park, with a count estimated at approximately 300 waterfalls.
Bison, bears, geysers, waterfalls, wolves and so much more await visitors at Yellowstone! Because of the courageous men and women who fought to have this national gem preserved and protected, today we get to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Yellowstone National Park. May we always treasure its past and its future!
