Virginia became the 10th state in the union in 1788. In 1607, it was home to Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America, and it later gave the nation founding figures like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

The Revolutionary War era gave Virginia its nickname, the Old Dominion, and the Civil War effectively ended here: Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
Today Virginia is home to Mount Vernon, George Washington's historic estate, and Arlington National Cemetery, where the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier continues day and night. [Read more in the included brochure]
