South Carolina became the 8th state in the union on May 23, 1788. Its recorded history dates to 1670, when English colonists established Charleston, the colony's first permanent settlement.

On April 12, 1861, Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, marking the first shots of the Civil War. South Carolina had already been the first state to secede from the Union, just months earlier in December 1860.
The palmetto tree became a lasting symbol of the state after cannonballs harmlessly bounced off the spongy palmetto-log walls of a fort on Sullivan's Island during a Revolutionary War battle, and it remains on the state flag today. [Read more in the included brochure]
