The beautiful state of Delaware was the first state to ratify the constitution, and we're proud to feature it as the first in our 50 State Heritage Collection. In addition to being called the First State, Delaware is also known to many as the Diamond State. Thomas Jefferson called it the Diamond State because it was the jewel amongst the 13 states at that time due to its prime location on the Eastern Seaboard.

In 1775, when the American Revolution was coming to an end and it was time to vote for the Declaration of Independence, there had been a deadlock on the vote for independence in Philadelphia. Caesar Rodney, who served in the Continental Congress, famously did a midnight ride seventy miles through a thunderstorm to Independence Hall on July 1, 1776. He arrived on July 2 to vote and soon after Delaware joined eleven other states in favor of the resolution of Independence. Caesar Rodney was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and Delaware was quick to ratify the new U.S. Constitution. On December 7, 1787, Delaware became the first state of the United States of America

I absolutely love the Delaware ornament. Not sure, if it was new this year or not - but I never saw it before. The details are absolutely beautiful. I am so glad, I purchased it.

Was very pleased with the WHHS's rendition of the Delaware Christmas ornament, the first in a series, as the ornaments are being issued in the order of their joining the union. I collect Delaware ornaments, and this one will be a beautiful addition to my collection, as it depicts some of the First State's landmarks and symbols, including the old State House in Dover, the Breakwater Light in Lewes, the equestrian statue of Caesar Rodney that stood for years in Rodney Square in Wilmington, the aircraft representing the Air Mobility Command Center at Dover AFB, and the peach blossom that represents Delaware's peach growing industry of yesteryear. I discovered this ornament on-line, and am glad to have had the opportunity to acquire one of these beautiful creations by the White House Historical Society.
